Innovative Youth Transform Waste at Bhutan's Challenge

In an inspiring display of creativity and environmental consciousness, young minds at the National Innovation Challenge 2026 turned waste into groundbreaking solutions. Held in Bhutan, this prestigious event spotlighted the potential of youth-driven innovation to address global sustainability challenges.

Transforming Trash into Treasure ๐Ÿ”„

Students from Tendruk Central School in Samtse and Khamdang Lower Secondary School in Trashi Yangtse emerged as the winners, crafting innovative products from everyday waste. Tendruk Central School introduced Druk Eco Nova, a biodegradable bioplastic derived from plastic waste that decomposes within four to five months. This project aims to revolutionize sustainable packaging and reduce plastic waste significantly.

Karma Choden, a student from Tendruk Central, expressed their future ambitions: "Our goal is to collaborate with the Samtse industrial hub to utilize fruit peels and covers, instead of discarding them, to further enhance our product."

Pioneering Paper Solutions โœ๏ธ

Meanwhile, Khamdang Lower Secondary School tackled paper waste by creating Green Heart Ngugu, a line of recycled-paper pens. These pens not only mitigate paper waste in schools but also promote afforestation efforts. Tshering Dawa, a student from Khamdang, shared their vision to substitute plastic pens and improve their product's design and quality.

This fourth edition of the challenge brought together 32 students from eight schools, emphasizing the theme of a "greener Bhutan." The platform provided by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, in collaboration with the Bhutan Youth Development Fund and UNICEF, not only encouraged innovation but also empowered students to tackle community challenges head-on.

Supporting Young Innovators with Resources ๐Ÿ’ก

The winning teams received 120,000 ngultrum as seed money to further develop their innovative projects. Such initiatives highlight the importance of investing in youth as catalysts for sustainable development.
