Digital UPSHIFT Engages Over 27,000 Students in Bhutan

In a remarkable stride towards embracing digital education, Bhutan has successfully transitioned its innovative UPSHIFT program online. This initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, UNICEF Bhutan, and Google, is set to revolutionize how students engage with learning and innovation.

UPSHIFT Goes Digital 🎓

The UPSHIFT program, known for fostering creativity and problem-solving among Bhutanese youth, has now made its debut on Google Classroom. This digital platform offers a streamlined experience for both students and educators, significantly reducing administrative burdens. Teachers across 44 pilot schools have reported substantial workload reductions thanks to features like automated tracking and grading.

Digital badges and gamification elements have further motivated students, making the learning process both engaging and effective. With no additional licensing costs, the initiative ensures long-term sustainability and positions Bhutan as a leader in digitally enabled education in the region.

National Innovation Challenge 🌍

Coinciding with the digital launch is Bhutan’s fourth National Innovation Challenge, themed "UPSHIFT for a Greener Bhutan." This event saw students from eight schools competing to address environmental challenges. Innovative projects included faster decomposition methods for kitchen waste, eco-friendly pens from recycled materials, and biodegradable plastics.

• Green Heart Ngugu: A project from Khamdang Lower Secondary School transforms recycled paper into pens with plantable seed caps.
• Druk Eco Nova: Tendruk Central School's initiative creates biodegradable plastics from local materials, addressing Bhutan's significant waste management issues.

The launch of the UPSHIFT handbook for teachers marks another milestone. This resource, developed with support from the UNICEF Office of Innovation, will guide educators in transforming schools into hubs of creativity and innovation.

Since its inception, over 27,000 students from 264 schools have engaged with UPSHIFT, dedicating millions of hours to crafting smart solutions. This commitment underscores the program's potential to not only educate but also empower young Bhutanese as future leaders and innovators.
